Troubleshooting a Swaged Connection
A proper swaged connection depends on several components working together correctly. When something is wrong, the first question should not be “Which part failed?” but rather, “Which variable changed?”
Start with material and component compatibility. Confirm the cable or wire rope construction and diameter, then verify that the specified sleeve and corresponding Nicopress tool are appropriate for that combination. Next, verify the tooling setup. The sleeve must be placed in the correct tool groove, and the tool itself must be properly adjusted. A tool that is worn or out of adjustment can affect the compressed sleeve geometry—it may be necessary to adjust the tool before the fitting is pressed again and rechecked.
Then examine the assembly and press sequence. For an eye-splice, for example, the dead end extends one to two rope diameters beyond the sleeve, the assembly is positioned in the specified tool groove, and the presses are made in the prescribed sequence. Press sequence matters; applying the correct force in the wrong sequence is not the same as following the specified procedure.
Finally, verify rather than visually judge the result by inspecting each press with the correct Go-Gauge slot.
